The government renamed Port Blair as Sri Vijaypuram: Shah said – this is freedom from the symbols of slavery.

The government on Friday renamed Port Blair, the capital of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as Sri Vijayapuram. Home Minister Amit Shah gave this information on social media.

Earlier, on 23 January 2023, on the 126th birth anniversary of Netaji, Prime Minister Modi had decided to name 21 islands of Andaman and Nicobar Islands after Param Vir Chakra winners.

On 28 December 2018, the names of Havelock Island, Neil Island and Ross Island of Andaman and Nicobar were changed. Havelock Island was named Swaraj Dweep, Neil Island was named Shaheed Dweep and Ross Island was named Netaji Subhash Chandra Dweep.
